The Comforter

The Comforter is a 5-week Bible study that features the conversation of Jesus with His disciples in the gospel of John chapters 14, 15, and 16.

The study is designed to unpack this amazing conversation as Jesus sought to prepare His disciples for His imminent departure from the earth via the crucifixion, resurrection, and ultimately ascension to the right hand of the Heavenly Father. Jesus explained to His friends what He had planned for them: another Comforter who would take His place in their lives. We know this Comforter as the Holy Spirit.

This journey is a deep dive into the wonderful provision of Jesus for His believers and followers.

Session 1

In Lesson 1, “The Comforter,” the session centers on Jesus’ promise of the Holy Spirit as our personal Helper and source of strength. Even in the face of troubling news, Jesus encourages His disciples—and us—not to be afraid, because God is with us and for us. Through faith in Jesus and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we are empowered to live bravely, knowing we are never alone.

Session 2

In Lesson 2 of The Comforter, the focus is on the transformative power of being filled with the Holy Spirit, who guides us into truth through the Word of God. Unlike the temporary presence of the Spirit in the Old Testament, New Testament believers receive the Spirit permanently—bringing power, unity, and a personal connection to God's presence and guidance. As we engage deeply with Scripture and yield to the Spirit’s leading, He opens our eyes, shapes our responses, and equips us for God’s purposes.

Session 3

Lesson 3 of The Comforter centers on abiding in Jesus as we live out God's greater story through the power of the Holy Spirit. As we remain connected to Christ like branches to a vine, our role is not to produce fruit on our own but to faithfully abide—staying rooted in His Word, His love, and His purpose. Through the Spirit’s enabling presence, we learn to live in daily dependence, spiritual attentiveness, and obedient love, trusting that Jesus is the author and sustainer of our story.

Session 4

Lesson 4 of The Comforter emphasizes the transforming and convicting work of the Holy Spirit, who leads hearts from rebellion into belief in Jesus. Jesus promised that having the indwelling Spirit is even better than His physical presence, because the Spirit teaches, guides, convicts of truth, and glorifies Christ in our lives. In times of uncertainty, we’re invited to anchor ourselves in God’s Word, trust in His goodness, and walk in the peace and victory Jesus has already secured for us.

Session 5

Lesson 5 of The Comforter reminds us that as believers, we are the dwelling place of the Living God, and the Holy Spirit actively trains, guides, and empowers us to walk in truth and hope. Through intentional practices—like gratitude, prayer, and staying in the Word—we can deepen our connection to Christ and develop a mindset rooted in God’s promises rather than our problems. The Spirit fills us with resurrection power, comforts us in struggle, and invites us to daily experience peace, transformation, and the goodness of God.
